Sicily is separated from the Italian mainland by the Strait of Messina and is surrounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea in the north and the Ionian Sea in the east. The Strait of Sicily, which is located southwest of Sicily, is a strait between Tunisia and Sicily. It connects the eastern with the western Mediterranean. The majority of Sicily consists of a mountain or hill landscape, with the coastal landscape on the east- and north coasts, rising steeply out of the sea. Many rocky coasts and bays with some sandy beaches can be found here. To the south, the country and the stretches of coast become flatter. Here you will also find the longest sandy beaches in Sicily.
