There is a lot to discover on the Island of Skopelos! If you want to marvel at the film locations of “Mamma mia”, this is just as possible as many other natural and cultural highlights that you can find on this green pearl in the North Aegean. The many pines are typical of this island and sometimes extend to the surge area of the sea. On the beaches of Milia, Elios, Armenopetra, Panormos, Velanio, Antrines and Agnontas, pine trees also offer you a pleasant protection from the sun.
There is also a lot to see for those interested in culture: if you head to the Hora (capital) of Skopelos, for example, you will immerse yourself in a picturesque labyrinth of whitewashed little streets that will fascinate you. If you climb the path up to the Byzantine castle ruins, carefully maintained houses with flower terraces and color-coordinated door and window arches will attract your attention. The architectural style is unique! The former owners of these well-preserved town houses were rich merchants, landowners or seafarers who made money. The approximately 40 small churches and chapels also testify to the religiousness of the local population from then and now. Lean back and relax with a good drink in one of the many cafes. The hospitable owners will be happy to cater for you!
The port of Loutraki, which dates back to ancient times, is also worth seeing. Roman artifacts such as former bathing areas were found here. The arts and crafts are still very important here, which benefits you: Family businesses have been producing beautiful brassware, embroidery and vases of all shapes for generations; you will surely find a suitable souvenir for your loved ones at home!
Another attraction is the Agios Ioannis Monastery in Kastri, which sits imposingly on the top of a mighty rock. You have to climb over 100 steps before reaching the monastery, which became famous via a wedding scene in the film Mamma Mia.
