Together with Hydra and Poros, the island of Spetses played an important role in the Greek War of Independence, which hit the country about 200 years ago. The Greek heroine Laskarina Bouboulinas lived in Spetses, whose house is now open to the public as a museum. Here you can find out more about her life and her passionate dedication to Greek independence.
In the port area of the capital Spetses you can still find ancient cannons that were used in the battles of the War of Independence in 1821. After the end of the war they were simply left behind. Today they adorn the local coffeehouses and bars in the old town as historical symbols of commemoration. Next to the harbor area you will find the busy and centrally located Dapia square, which is also worth a visit.
The picturesque island of Spetses has long attracted aristocracy, who built fancy and impressive villas on the coast. Today, this "aristocratic" island is accessible to everyone. In addition to the historic villas, the island of Spetses impresses with its magnificent nature and a large selection of dream beaches.
