Climate, wind and weather on the coast in Croatia

The climate in Croatia is "Mediterranean", so dry and hot summer and a cold and damp winter. The coast is considered as one of the sunniest areas in Europe! It often has more than 2.500 hours of sunshine per year, the seawater has a good bathing temperature from May to October. During a cruise on the Adriatic from April to October, often even at the end of October, it is very pleasant and the water is still warm. Winds vary, in summer they tend to get weaker, in spring and autumn they can be stronger. The choice of a bay, where you can anchor the boat during a night, should of course be made depending on the wind:

Maestrale (also called Maestral) - This wind should not be confused with the "Mistral" of the Rhone valley in France, which is extremely capricious! It is a normal and widespread wind that often accompanies you during a yacht charter in Croatia. It starts in the late morning and lasts until the evening with wind power up to 4 Beaufort. Deep blue sky, small clouds, steady wind, so perfect sailing conditions! What else could you desire?! Maestrale is a thermal wind that arises due to faster heating of air on land than at sea. In this way, the air flows over the land, blowing in the lower layers from the sea to land, and in the upper area, it blows back into the sea. This creates the proper wind dynamics for sailors, which lasts from 10 to 18 o'clock. The reverse effect is often observed at night: Burin, a night wind, arises due to faster cooling of the land than at the sea.

Yugo - bad weather is coming, the wind is blowing from south-east. First, there is a harsh weather, then rain and strong wind, which develops a wind force up to 7 Beaufort. It takes a day or two and then ceases. In autumn and spring, it can blow stronger and longer.

Bora - this wind (female) is dangerous, but fortunately quite rare. Bora blows from the north-east and comes from the proverbial pure sky. In gusts the wind speed rises up to 9 Beaufort on the mainland. This is due to the large difference in air pressure between water and mountains. It usually only lasts one day, then the wind is moderate again.
